Aug. 5

Art: Perivale Gallery, located in Spring Bay on Manitoulin Island, will host its new show, In the Spirit of Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, until Aug. 6. Perivale Gallery’s artists accepted the challenge to produce a piece inspired in some way by Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven. The works of several guest artists are also included this year. Images of the works featured in the show is available for purchase on the gallery website, www.perivalegallery.com. Musical theatre: YES and STC have already broken a box office record for both companies during their partnership season with pre-sales for Jersey Boys: The Story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. The show is to run at Sudbury Theatre Centre from July 7 through Aug. 13. Tickets are available at www.sudburytheatre.com and cost $50 for adults and $35 for youth, plus tax.

Capreol Days: Professional wrestling and a comic con are returning to the Capreol Arena for Capreol Days on Aug. 4 and 5. The events kick off with Pints and Pile Drivers, featuring WWE legend The Mountie, Jacques Rougeau, on Aug. 4 beginning at 6:30 p.m. The excitement continues with the Capreol Comic Con on Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., under a new format called Capreol Geek X. Admission to the Geek X is free with the purchase of a $5 souvenir Capreol Days button or wristband. The Geek X day concludes with the Project X Wrestling Capreol Cup live professional wrestling. Bell time is 7 p.m. VIP wrestling tickets are $35 and general admission floor tickets are $25. Pints and Pile Drivers tickets are $35. Splash park: Splash N Go Adventure Parks Ltd. has announced its inflatable water park is open for the season at Bell Park. The park will host four 1.5-hour sessions throughout the day. The sessions will start at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to arrive one hour before their booking to sign in and complete waivers. Passes are now available for online purchase and include full access to the park. For more, go to splashngo.ca.

Science: After a lengthy absence, “terrible lizards” are stomping and roaring their way back to Science North. And this time, they will also be visiting Dynamic Earth. The animatronic dinosaurs not only move but also make sounds. and while the Science North dinosaur exhibit will be geared toward learning about dinosaurs, Dynamic Earth – which will have five animatronic and seven resin replica fossils of dinosaurs – will be all about paleontology (the study of ancient life). Dinosaur Discoveries will run to Sept. 4.

Music: free musical performances at the Peter Schneider Concert Series in Bell Park from 7 to 8:15 p.m. every Sunday in the summer. Aug. 6: Tea and Tequila is an upbeat, acoustic cover band who likes to have FUN! They play a large variety of music from classic rock, country to today’s top 40 tunes. In their short year and a half together, they have played many different venues, from local bars, restaurants, festivals and fundraisers to private parties. The band loves audience participation and will invite people on stage with them to sing backup or play the tambourine. Tea & Tequila is the perfect addition to any event or party.

Art: Perivale Gallery will host Luminescence, an exhibition and sale of the newest original works of Sudbury-based artist Monique Legault. The shows opens Aug. 7 at Perivale Gallery, 1320 Perivale Rd. East in Spring Bay, on Manitoulin Island. It continues until Aug. 13; however, available works will continue to be displayed until Sept. 17. This collection features works in a variety of sizes and themes. Images of the works to be featured in this exhibition will be uploaded to Perivale Gallery’s website (perivalegallery.com) by 7 a.m. on Aug. 7. Inquiries and sales will be welcomed as of 7 a.m. by calling 705-210-0290. Doors open at 10 a.m. Legault will greet gallery visitors from 1-4 p.m. on Monday.

Jazz Sudbury, now in its 15th year, is getting ready for its 2023 festival, Sept. 8-10. Headline performers this year include Crystal Shawanda, OKAN, Alex Bird & The Jazz Mavericks, Queen Kong, Emilie-Claire Barlow, Peripheral Vision, and Denzal Sinclaire. Fundraiser: The Sudbury Women’s Centre is launching a new initiative, the Thrifty Thursday Fundraiser, a monthly fundraiser aimed at helping women, girls, trans and non-binary individuals navigate violent and challenging life situations. The SWC invites the community to join the cause by thrifting at its boutique, My Sister’s Closet. The fundraiser takes place on the last Thursday of each month, with 100 per cent of proceeds going to basic needs items for clients. Arts: Grab your squad, slap on your best walking shoes and prepare to be swept off your feet by Sudbury’s new guided mural tours. Up Here festival is thrilled to announce they will be hosting guided tours once a month until October. Up Here’s guided mural tours are the crème de la crème when it comes to discovering Sudbury’s impressive urban art gallery. You will uncover the stories and secrets behind more than 30 monumental works of art, while delving into back alleys to reveal hidden treasures crafted by brilliant artists from around the world. The tours take place Aug. 19 during Up Here 9 (a second tour takes place at 3 p.m.); Aug. 20; Sept. 16; and Oct. 14. All tours begin at noon. Art: Sudbury’s art gallery is looking for financial support from the public after an ‘unprovoked’ attack damaged its external HVAC units. The units are needed to keep the museum and its collection properly cooled and heated, curator Demetra Christakos said on a GoFundMe page set up to raise money for the Art Gallery of Sudbury. Christakos said it will cost $15,000 to replace the HVAC units. To donate, go to gofund.me/5a084c74.

50/50 draw: The Sudbury Manitoulin Children’s Foundation has announced its online 50/50 raffle to raise money for children in need. Funds will go directly into helping marginalized children in the districts of Sudbury and Manitoulin attend camp, sports, or leisure activities. They will also help eligible wards attend post-secondary education by emptying the organization’s waitlist.

50/50 raffle: The Sudbury Manitoulin Children’s Foundation has joined Sudbury’s online raffle fun for the community to help children in need have the chance to be kids. Each month a new raffle will be held, with one lucky winner receiving 50 per cent of the total jackpot earnings. Boating: Boaters who do not have a pleasure craft operator card can attend a course and exam 6-8 p.m. on one of the dates listed below at the Lions Club Chelmsford/Azilda, RR 35 and Montee Principale, next to Nickel City Cheese. The cost is $70/person and you only pay if you pass. The course is for ages 11 and up, and includes the exam, guide and pleasure craft operator card. A Supervisor Common Core: Act & Mining Regulations session will be held Sept. 19. On Sept. 20, a Supervisor Common Core: Introduction to Safety Programs (Mining) session will be held. A session entitled Supervisor Common Core: Manage Employees (Mining) goes Sept. 21. On Sept. 26, a Supervisor Common Core: Occupational Health & Industrial Hygiene (Mining) and a JHSC Certification Part 2-General sessions will both be held. Children: The beloved children’s entertainers, The Wiggles, are coming to Sudbury as part of their Ready, Steady, Wiggle Canadian tour.
